Pi Pizza Battersea

The first thing visitors see when they arrive at Pi Pizza Battersea is a glorious ceiling made from hundreds of dried flowers, which took six staff members 80 hours to create. The ceiling sets the summery tone for the rest of the restaurant, where the main dining room has a glass ceiling, a vibrant blue tiled wall, cheery yellow sofas and even its own in-house tree. Another room has walls that fully open onto the streets of Battersea while the crowning glory is an open kitchen with a huge, glowing pizza oven. From the oven comes delicious artisan pizzas with a perfectly thin base, doughy yet crispy crust and an imaginative array of toppings. Options include wild boar salami, red chilli and piquillo peppers, which perfectly balances sweet with spice; garlic, chilli, balsamic roasted aubergines and aged parmesan; gorgonzola, baked pear and walnut cream; and Lebanese spiced ground lamb, Turkish yoghurt and fresh parsley. Can't decide? Guests can go half and half on a pizza for one or split a pizza for two, which can be split into halves or thirds. Nocellara olives that have been stuffed with cheese and fried are another indulgent treat not to be missed while the lemon meringue is the perfect fresh and zesty conclusion. What's more, there's an entire menu of starters, pizzas and desserts suitable for vegans.

In an old school on Hoxton Square, Radio Alice Pizzeria has all the hallmarks of a destination pizzeria. It's stylish - think solid marble topped bar and peeling paint walls - has easy drinking wines from Italy and top class pizzas. Made using yeast and type one stoneground flour, the dough is left to ferment for 24 hours, making it delightfully light and fluffy on the inside, crisp on the outside and easy to digest. These guys know what they're doing. Brothers Matteo and Salvatore Aloe, who already have five successful pizzerias in Italy, have teamed up with Gails co-founder, Emma King, to bring their pizzas to London. Topped with delicious, fresh ingredients, the gorgonzola, speck and honey combination, which comes with fiordilatte and walnuts, is especially good. Choose from Radio Alice in Hoxton or Radio Alice Clapham, both come highly recommended.

Having successfully transitioned from pop up to permanent, there are now several Homeslice branches across London: Covent Garden, Shoreditch and Fitzrovia. The rustic restaurants serve ten pizza choices a day, all of which have a focus on fresh, quality produce with innovative flavours and textures. Combinations of artichoke and courgette or bone marrow, fire roasted spring onion and watercress are the more unusual toppings alongside the classic Margarita, which is always on the menu. Pricing is as simple as the menu: slices are all priced at 4 each, eat in or take away, while whole pizzas - 20" and 8 decent sized slices - are charged at 20. The whole pizzas can also be served half and half, allowing you to try more than one topping. There's Camden Hells Lager on tap as well as bottled craft beer, prosecco and a small selection of white, red and rose wine.


Franco Manca

This rapidly growing chain still serves some of the best pizza in London.

When Franco Manca say they use slow-rising sourdough to make their pizzas they mean slow-rising. The organic flour, yeast and water sourdough mixture is left for a minimum of 20 hours to prove before being baked in a wood burning brick oven from Naples. The result is excellent pizza, right to the crust. There are just six options - a short but tasty choice of various fresh ingredients from wild mushrooms to cured chorizo, all at a very reasonable price around the 6 mark. Wash down with organic wine from Piedmont for an experience so authentically Italian you could almost forget you're in London. Since the original Franco Manca opened in Brixton back in 2008, the restaurant's sourdough pizza has become one of London's favourites and you can now find outposts of the rapidly growing chain all across the city.


L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele

Possibly the best pizza in the world, this Naples favourite opened in London in 2017.

Regarded by many as the best pizza in Naples, and therefore possibly the best pizza in the world, L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele opened its second branch in 2017 and, luckily for us, it's in London. Feeding Italians since 1870 - they call it "the sacred temple of pizza" - the restaurant has perfected its Neapolitan recipe over many decades and boasts a thin yet doughy crust and fresh, simple toppings. The traditional Margherita and Marinara take centre stage on the menu alongside two rotating specials. To drink, there's Peroni beer and wine from Italy's Campania region. Just be prepared to queue...

Bringing a slice of rustic charm to well-heeled Chelsea, Made In Italy serves traditional Italian dishes in a cosy, stripped back dining
room. Run by Giuseppe, Sara and Angelo Corsaro, the family run eatery is one of eight restaurants in the group and has been going strong for 25 years, feeding hungry Londoners hearty, homemade dishes that are sure to transport them direct to Italy. In 2018, in line with a full renovation, the restaurant updated its menu for the first time in its history in order to be a part of a new generation of pizza concept sites. Diners can now choose between four different flour bases: classic Neapolitan, multigrain, stone ground semi whole wheat and gluten free. Fermented for 48 hours and made using only the finest Italian flours, the result is a perfectly light, crispy and doughy base that's sure to please all pizza fans. A wide variety of toppings are available, from the classic Margherita and Diavola to the new Truffly, which combines mushrooms, ricotta and truffle oil, and the Gianluca Vialli, topped with mozzarella, nduja di spilinga, spicy salami, stracciatella di burrata and fresh chilli. What's more, the menu is now brimming with vegetarian and vegan options, including the Vegan Glory, with vegan mozzarella, black olives, fresh basil, onion and vegan parmesan. Other highlights include the selection of homemade burrata that's made in the restaurant's very own cheese parlour - the deep fried Burrata Atomica is an indulgent treat not to be missed - and the arancini. Combining traditional flavours and design with modern dining concepts and dietary needs, Made In Italy is an exciting eatery with far-reaching appeal.

Pizza Pilgrims James and Thom Elliot have made a name for themselves for serving excellent Napoli-style pizzas from the back of Piaggio van. In August 2013, the pizza loving boys opened their first restaurant proper, a Soho eaterie just around the corner from Berwick Street Market, where you can often find them and their van. The Soho outlet has since been followed by one in Kingly Court, Exmouth Market, Shoreditch and West India Quay. The pizzeria's menu is simple but effective: Before Pizza, a small selection of olives and bread; Not Pizza, understandably only two options; After Pizza, a tempting range of desserts including a Nutella pizza ring and sorbets, served frozen inside the appropriate fruit skin; and, of course, Pizza! Diners can choose from ten pizzas cooked by Michelangelo - that's the oven's name, obviously - and toppings range from Portobello mushroom and truffle oil to Nduja sausage and wild broccoli. Even the drinks menu is wonderfully simple: Pizza Red, Pizza White and Pizza Prosecco on tap (yes, wine on tap!) and a small selection of other Italian drinks.

London pizza pros Made of Dough, who have sold 100,000 pizzas at pop-ups and festivals, sets up their first ever permanent site on Bellenden Road in Peckham after a stint in a shipping container in Brixton. A buzzing neighbourhood hang-out, the Peckham pizzeria tops its award-winning lean dough pizzas with choices of Brindisa chorizo and Merguez - the result of a collaboration with local butcher Flock & Herd. Seasonal sides, gelato milkshakes and lemon bellinis are supplemented with monthly music and wine nights at the 50-seat pizzeria where you can watch your food being cooked in the open wood fire oven.
