The event of the opening day of the Olympics is one that everyone can enjoy for free: the men's cycling road race. Besides the ticketed start/finish area at The Mall and Box Hill, where the riders will complete nine 15km circuits, anyone is allowed to watch the action beside the road. The route runs down through Kensington, Putney and Richmond Park before heading past Hampton Court and into Surrey, and then back via Kingston. What's more, Britain's Mark Cavendish is the favourite for gold. Other highlights on Day One include record-breaking Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps locking horns with his US rival Ryan Lochte in the men's 400m individual medley at the Aquatics Centre - which is one of four swimming medal events. The GB men's team have a chance to win a medal at Lord's in the archery, while other medal events include shooting, judo and fencing.
