Day 10 Sporting Events

Monday 6th August

She may only be 27 years old but Beth Tweddle is aiming to become the oldest gymnast to win an Olympic medal since the 1964 Tokyo Games in the artistic gymnastics uneven bars event at North Greenwich Arena. Tweddle was meant to retire in 2006 after disappointing in Athens – but a fourth-place in Beijing gave the Brit belief that she could make the podium on home soil. On the Olympic Stadium track, Welsh hurdler Dai Greene – who once flirted with a football career at Swansea City – is in action as he bids to become the first British male gold medalist in the 400m hurdles for 44 years. Without the hurdles, LaShawn Merritt – the American once banned after failing a drugs test after, he claims, taking a 'male enhancement product' – defends his 400m crown from Beijing. Also on Day 10, Russian double Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva aims to make it a third gold in the pole vault while the Velodrome sees Jason Kenny take part in the track cycling men's sprint after he was given the nod by GB selectors ahead of Sir Chris Hoy.

Gold medals up for grabs: 18
Today's medal sports: sailing, shooting, equestrian, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, wrestling, weightlifting, athletics

Non sporting events on Day 10 around London

Monday 6th August

Actor, gadget lover, national treasure and now Olympic Ambassador, (if you don't mind), Stephen Fry will interview 400 metre hurdle Gold medallist Edwin Moses at the Criterion Theatre as part of their Playing the Games programme of events. You can catch them in conversation at the Piccadilly Circus venue at 1pm. Elizabeth Fraser (vocalist of the Cocteau Twins) has been persuaded to perform her own songs for the first time since the group disbanded; it promises to be a highlight of Antony's Meltdown and you can catch her both tonight and tomorrow night (6th & 7th August) at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall. Reggae legend Jimmy Smith headlines a Jamaica 50 concert at IndigO2, the 'Many Rivers to Cross' singer shares the bill with Derrick Morgan, Max Romeo and many others. In north London the Camden Fringe continues apace and on tonight's bill is Take Desire Away, a one-man performance, conceived and presented by Mansel David at the Etcetera Theatre; and The Balcony in which Jean Genet's 1950s brothel is transported to London 2021 by The King's Players at the Camden People's Theatre. There's chamber music at Cadogan Hall, part of The Proms which also continue at the Royal Albert Hall with Prom 32 in which Bernstein's Mass receives its first complete Proms performance, by one of its most ardent champions, Estonian-American conductor Kristjan Jarvi. It will also be the first time that audiences will be able to see the National Youth Orchestra of Wales perform at the BBC Proms. Today is the first opportunity to see Tania Bruguera's ongoing art project, Immigrant Movement International, which appears at Tate Modern's Oil Tanks for 10 days this summer.
