Day 15 Sporting Events

Saturday 11th August

With 32 gold medals up for grabs, the penultimate day of the Olympics is by far the busiest day of the London Games. Things get off to an early start with the 9.30am final in the K1 200m canoe sprint at Eton Dorney, for which 28-year-old British trainee accountant Ed McKeever is the favourite. Mo Farah could add to GB's medal tally in the 5,000m final in the Olympic Stadium which happens before a flurry of gold-medal events: the women's 4x400m, the women's 800m final (which will see South Africa's Caster Semenya take on Russian Mariya Savinova) and then the blue riband relay event, the men's 4x100m final at 9pm. With both Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake on their side, Jamaica could probably still field a shot-putter in one of the remaining slots and take the gold. Also on Day 15, the men's football final takes place at 3pm at Wembley Stadium while GB will be rooting for poster-boy Tom Daley in the diving 10m platform at the Aquatics Centre after his disappointment in the men's synchronised event on Day Three. In boxing, Briton's Luke Campbell and Thomas Stalker will target medals for bantamweight and light-welterweight at the ExCeL Centre.

Gold medals up for grabs: 32
Today's medal sports: modern pentathlon, athletics, canoe sprint, mountain bike cycling, sailing, rhythmic gymnastics, football, wrestling, hockey, boxing, diving, handball, basketball, taekwondo, volleyball

For the third Proms Saturday matinee, the Britten Sinfonia, one fo the world's finest chamber orchestras, perform two UK premieres - Michael Finnissy's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Gigue Machine – and a world premiere of Brian Elias's Electra Mourns, at Cadogan Hall. At the Royal Albert Hall, Thierry Fischer performs his final concert as Principal Conductor of BBC National Orchestra of Wales, directing Berlioz's monumental Requiem. Sacrilege, the inflatable Stonehenge that is travelling up and down the country, arrives as Christchurch Green, inviting revellers to rediscover their inner child and a good, old-fashioned night of variety, comedy, music and clowns is on offer at Saturday Night at the Spiegeltent at the Southbank Centre. The View play at BT London Live in Hyde Park in the penultimate evening of entertainment and Brian Blessed, Stephen Fry and Eddie Izzard appear at the Criterion Theatre for Sporting Stories Before Bedtime, part of the two week long Playing The Games programme. Izzard also appears at the Soho Theatre for the final date of his Work in Progress show.
