London area of E16 guide
What to do and where to stay in London's E16 neighbourhood
The Docklands underwent major redevelopment from the 1980s but nearby Custom House and Canning Town have not benefitted from the effects, remaining one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Regeneration has tended to focus on the industrialised area south of two of the Royal Docks, which are still accessible to ships but are largely used for water sports nowadays. Attention has been directed here too by two huge developments in the last 25 years: the Thames Barrier and London City Airport. In 2000 Royal Victoria Dock received another coup with ExCel appearing on its shores to host a whole range of exciting events and exhibitions including the annual London Boat Show, which sees vessels mooring up along the water. There a few modern hotels ideally positioned for accessing the airport and exhibition centre in this part of town.
