London area of Kilburn guide
What to do and where to stay in London's Kilburn neighbourhood
Divided between the three boroughs of Brent, Camden and Westminster, Kilburn has the highest Irish population of any London area - it is said that 13% of residents were born in Ireland - as well as a large Afro-Caribbean population. The Kilburn High Road dates back to pre-Roman times and was the inspiration behind the punk musician Ian Drury's first band, Kilburn & the High Roads. In the 18th century, the water from Kilburn wells was renowned for its medicinal qualities, while nowadays notable landmarks include the Tricycle Theatre, the Gothic St Augustine's church and the Grade II listed Art Deco Gaumont State Cinema, currently home to a fast-growing Evangelical church after two decades housing a Bingo Hall. Comedians David Mitchell and Robert Webb are famous Kilburn residents, as are the author Zadie Smith, the model Kate Moss and the actor Hugh Laurie.
