Acton Green Common provides a public open space to the south of Acton Green, an outlying hamlet which became a parish with the building of St Alban's Church in 1877-8. The grade II listed church still stands today as an attractive focal point in the area, dominating the park's open space when viewed from the south. The present day Acton Green Common, with its children's playground, mature trees and the railway embankment behind it, is all that remains of the ancient common - its central public path used to be a Roman road. Crossing over Fishers Lane takes you to Chiswick Common from where it's possible to walk to Turnham Green, covering the three green spaces in a 1.9 mile round trip. The area surrounding Acton Green used to be famous for its laundries from the 1860s until access to electricity put an end to handwashing around the First World War - earning it the nickname, the 'washtub of London'. Pembroke House Laundry Ltd, established in 1864, still continues to launder for Londoners to this day.
