The worldwide collection of the Cuming Family accompanies exhibitions on the history of Southwark (from Roman times to the 19th century) in this unique museum. The permanent exhibition at the Cuming Museum, housed in Old Walworth Town Hall, takes up two of the museum's three galleries and includes many strange and wonderful objects and curiosities from a collection amassed between 1780 and 1900. Richard Cuming began collecting when his aunt gave him three fossils and an old Indian coin, his son Henry continued his work and the results were shown to the public in 1906. The Marshalea Prison Pump - taken from a prison which used to be close to London Bridge, Roman statues, and The Mannings' Tombstones are notable objects. There are also special displays on Southwark and temporary exhibitions on a variety of topics, some drawing on the local history, others drawing on objects from the Cumming collection.
