In the 1940s a plan was devised to create several green areas connecting different areas of London to the River Thames. The 90-acre Mile End Park in Tower Hamlets is part of that scheme, created from land brought into park use over 50 years - much of it formerly housing and industrial buildings and some of it separated by roads, railways and waterways. The Green Bridge connects the park where the Mile End Road divides it. 193 Grove Road - at the edge of the park - was made famous by sculptor Rachel Whiteread who created 'House', casting its interior as an exterior and securing her the Turner Prize in 1993. Facing the western edge of the park is the Ragged School Museum, housed in three former warehouses in Copperfield Road alongside the canal.
