Located in the heart of Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum has a monumental mission: to showcase mankind's association with the sea. The collection dates back to 1823 when a National Gallery of Naval Art was established, and the museum is housed in an elegant building which used to be an asylum. The collection spans seascape paintings and scientific instruments, and covers everything from sea power to piracy. The new Nelson gallery, which opened to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, displays Nelson's bloodstained uniform. Visitors can try their hand with ropes, rowing, and steering equipment. The Peter Harrison Planetarium, Meridian Line and the largest telescope in the UK are all highlights of a trip to the museum.
