Southwark Park in Bermondsey first opened its gates to the public in 1869 and was one of the earliest parks to be opened by the Metropolitan Board of Works. Covering an area of 63 acres, the design of the park is attributed to Alexander McKenzie (who also landscaped Finsbury Park) and offers fantastic wide-open spaces, perfect for playing games, picnics, walking or just enjoying the scenery. Southwark Park offers a wide range of sporting facilities, a cafe, art gallery, bandstand and boating lake. Look out for the drinking fountain - not just any old watering hole but the first public memorial to honour a working class man; it was created to commemorate Mr Jabez West, a member of a local Temperance Society who was a supporter of the teetotal movement from 1875. Access to the park is via four entrances at Jamaica Road, Lower Road, Southwark Park Road and Gomm Road.
