Brixton Hill was still relatively rural when the Brixton Windmill was built in 1816 by John Muggeridge and Sons and the area remained largely agricultural until the middle of the 19th century. Today, visitors can see the mill which was one of five working mills in Lambeth at the beginning of the 19th century. Leased by John Ashby in 1817, the mill became known as Ashby's Mill for the whole of its working life. In 1862 the surrounding area had become so built up there wasn't enough wind to drive the mill and the sails were removed. But that wasn't the end of its story, in 1902 the windmill returned to use powered by steam and then by gas. A visit to the mill explores these two periods in the mill's history - and you can still see the original wind-powered machinery once used to make stoneground flour. In 1917, a hundred years after the mill was built a press report noted that "the conditions of 100 years ago are maintained in this rural spot and it is a relic of an age which is fast becoming a memory". Guided tours, limited to three adults plus guide or two adults and two
children plus guide, must be booked in advance as access to the upper floors of
the windmill is very restricted. Guided tours are on the hour and half hour and each tour lasts approximately 30
