Visitor Information
What was once one of the seven large Victorian burial sites in London is now a wonderfully if slightly spooky green space. Opened in 1841 Tower Hamlets Cemetery is arguably the least well known of London's 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries grouped together with its more famous contemporaries, Highgate and Brompton cemeteries. It hasn't been used as a burial site since 1966 and is now more widely used as a nature reserve area comprising of 33 acres of mature, woodland and meadow land. Enter through the main gate on Southern Grove with the Soanes Centre just inside on the right. From here it's a pleasant walk to Mile End Park taking in the green spaces along the Ackroyd Drive Greenlink. An active friends group organise free activities (donations welcome) including nature watch activities, grave research as well as an annual woodland craft and fun day; find out about current events and sign up for guided walks through their website.
