Ten minutes from the nearest tube, in a drab and ugly corner of Oval, sits one of the most surreal nightlife experiences you can have in the capital. This is a Tiki Bar - a Hawaiian theme bar - and they really let you know it. The walls are covered in bamboo, giant masks with flashing eyes loom up over the danceflloor, the staff have garlands on, and even the table-footballers are wearing Hawaiian shirts.

Stepping through the door is like stepping out of South London and into a particularly tacky corner of Las Vegas, or possibly a particularly silly David Lynch movie. The absolute lack of irony underpinning all this kitsch has created a unique atmosphere, and the regulars absolutely lap it up. On the night we visited there was a terrible Elvis impersonator doing a live act, a brilliant DJ mixing Motown and 50s Rock'n'Roll to a packed dancefloor, and a hands-in-the-air crowd of surfwear-clad young people, including a large group who'd come in their wetsuits.

Kitsch beyond belief and more fun than you can shake your hula skirt at, South London Pacific is the perfect antidote to a London winter.
