Hammersmith's original gastropub was highly rated for its bare brick walls, wooden furniture and no frills interior; what mattered was the food. Things have changed in the last few years and, with the rise of competition and the exchange of ownership, The Stonemason's is no longer the destination gastropub it once was. Back when it was at the height of its game, this was one of four pubs - including the Pilot on Wellesley Road, Chiswick - which were owned by Ewan Guinness and Matt Jacomb who sold to local brewer Fuller Smith & Turner (for a reported £8 million) in 2005. It used to be that if the Stonemasons was full, we'd head down the street to the Dartmouth Castle, now it's the other way around. Still, compared to the sticky carpeted pubs that typically occupy King Street, it's a decent enough place to grab a drink and a bite and certainly worth the detour off the high street.
