Once the thriving hub of Britain's newspaper publishing industry, Fleet Street now plays host to some very historic pubs, beautiful old churches and large financial buildings, but sadly no journalistic pursuits. News International was the first to break from traditional, suddenly moving production of the Sun and the Times to Wapping in 1985. All of the remaining press organisations steadily followed suit putting the end to a tradition first started in 1702 by 'The Daily Courant', which launched its first edition on this historic street. Visitors to Fleet Street can still soak up the colourful and rich history of the area which runs east from the Strand towards Ludgate Hill and St Paul's Cathedral, and was so-called after one of the many rivers flowing from beneath London's streets to the Thames. Many of the pubs and bars on the street are still heaving with journalists and lawyers - Fleet Street is also home to The Royal Courts of Justice - particularly El Vino's wine bar and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (one of Dr Samuel Johnson's regular haunts). St Bride's - one of Wren's churches - is often the venue for memorial services to journalists, many of whom are honoured with plaques on the walls.
