Visitor Information
Jill Furmanovsky, a professional photographer since 1972 and best-known for her images of rock musicians, is the brains behind the Rockarchive galleries. During a stint at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design from 1972 to 1974 she spent just two weeks training in photography and from there became the official photographer at the Rainbow Theatre in 1972, one of London's premier rock venues. When she founded the Rockarchive, Furmanovsky brought together a whole library of well known rock photographers and their iconic images of leading musicians. This gallery in Chelsea variously shows exhibitions in addition to its permanent collection. Here you'll see images by Barrie Wentzell, Melody Maker's photographer from 1965 until 1975 and by Bob Gruen, John and Yoko's personal photographer. All the great rock and roll icons are here: The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Queen. Many prints are limited edition and come signed by the photographer, often with an anecdote about the story behind the image - making them valuable collectors' items as well as part of rock and roll history.
