Originally part of Peckham Rye's train station in the 1930s Coal Room is the latest restaurant from the Peckham-based entrepreneurs responsible for the Old Spike Roastery, Camberwell's Spike + Earl and Peckham restaurant Aside. Where the ticket office used to be you'll now find a 24-seater cafe in the beautifully restored Grade II listed building which transforms into a bar in the evenings. Counter seats around a large, sunken, open-plan kitchen are in addition to the main restaurant space and a private dining room for up to 14 - the vaulted space with its Victorian mosaic floor also serves as a butchery and bakery in the day, transforming into a candlelit dining space at night. Meats from the on-site butchery are cooked on the robata grill and in coal ovens. Start with a bacon sandwich (cured on site) and scrambled eggs, move on to midday flatbreads and enjoy meats and fish cooked over charcoal at night. Design comes from Peckham Architects Kennedy Woods using the heritage of the station to create a space that feels smart and glamorous.
