Located down a backstreet between Bank and St Paul's, Enoteca Guildhall is an intimate 38-seat restaurant and wine bar with a stylish décor, open-plan kitchen and service with a smile. Enoteca specialises in Italian tapas-style dishes, with sharing platters of antipasto, fromaggi and cicchetti leading the way. Some of the larger main dishes include a melt-in-the-mouth slow-cooked pig's cheek, roast suckling pig, tender slices of grilled steak with rocket salad, and home-made pumpkin and sage ravioli - but the menu changes constantly to ensure fresh, seasonal food and welcome variety. There's a wonderful deli counter that boasts the very best Italian produce from local suppliers (such as Parma ham, mortadella, spicy Calabrian 'Nduja, olives, mozzarella, parmesan and other cheeses). Enoteca's walls are adorned with bottles of wine from small family estates and independent winemakers from all round the world. The emphasis is heavily on boutique over mainstream wines while maintaining a high level of quality and good value for money. Leaning towards the concept of 'piccolo e bello' (or 'small is beautiful'), Enoteca is an establishment that thrives on keeping things simple while fostering close ties with both its faithful clientele and local Italian suppliers. A couple of doors down from Hawksmoor Guildhall, Enoteca is a real find in the heart of the city: thanks to an ever-changing, delicious menu, a high-quality and intriguing wine list, the stylish interior, open-plan activity and attentive service, Enoteca has built up quite a following since taking a bow in spring 2012. Customers return because of the relationships forged within Enoteca's walls, where intimacy and bon vivant conviviality rule supreme. Closed on the weekends, Enoteca takes weekday bookings for lunch and dinner on a first-come first-served basis. Private parties, including wine tastings, can be arranged. Recommended.
