With a menu put together by head chef Suresh Pillai, a veteran of leading Indian restaurants Veeraswamy and Gymkhana, and interiors resembling an old distillery, Flora Indica presents an unusual take on Indian dining. The eccentric Old Brompton Road venue combines a restaurant and lounge with a pair of cocktail bars alongside the spacious dining area. The ground floor is given over to a 30-seat cocktail, gin and whisky lounge with a tiffin box menu of snacks and sharing dishes, while the lower-ground floor dining room seats 70 and offers an a la carte and tasting menu. Dishes include Isle of Mull hand-dived scallops pan-seared and poached in juniper-coconut milk, Cornish mussels with ginger and tamarind broth and a coriander naan and Tamworth pork vindaloo with purple garlic and palm vinegar. On the extensive drinks menu are craft beers by the Portobello Brewery, malt whiskies and small-batch gin and punch bar. With its Victorian plaster roses, Harris tweed upholstery and exposed metal pipes, the interior design combines a Kensington residence with 19th century brewing and distilling industry chic.
