For those who've benefitted from an expensive education, the name Gallery Mess should evoke found memories of that delightful school pudding, Eton Mess. For the rest of us it's a rather misleading term for what is a very neat and tidy cafe, bar and restaurant. Quite the opposite of messy, in fact. Stylishly decorated - "The owners have put a lot of money, style and panache into Gallery Mess" (The Independent) - this eaterie attached to the Saatchi Gallery is beautifully sleek, airy and the glass wall down one side opens onto the square's perfectly manicured gardens. What the 'mess' of Gallery Mess is actually refering to is its positioning off the King's Road and within what used to be the Duke of York's officers' mess. But, thankfully, you don't have to be an officer - or have a gentleman's allowance - to eat here. Surprisingly affordable meals include choices of avocado and fennel salad and a classic burger (both under a tenner). Open from 9am for breakfast, the restaurant stays open all day with the menu moving from The Great British Breakfast (classic fry) to chicken breast served with chunky chips for supper. They offer afternoon tea en route - scones with clotted cream and jam - we think the officers would have approved.
