Monica Galetti, part-time sous chef at Le Gavroche and judge on MasterChef: The Professionals, and her husband David, chief sommelier at the aforementioned Le Gavroche, fulfil their long-term personal dream with Mere. Their Charlotte Street restaurant, pronounced Mary, offers a choice of just six dishes at each course which change depending on what's available. Scallops served in a black curry can be followed by mains of squab, finishing with a dessert of citrus and yogurt. Joining Monica in the kitchen is long-term colleague and Head Chef Renée Miller. The wine list, as you'd expect, is a cut above with special additions of Bodega Catena 2014 through to reserve vintages. The interior, all blues and grey with accents of deep yellow, features the work of English artist Warren Kerley whose dramatic showpiece, made with hundreds of metal cork tops, hangs at the entrance to the bar area on the ground floor. Pride of place above a banquette in the main below ground dining room is a specially created traditional Samoan 'siapo', or tapa cloth.
