The Pig and Butcher occupies a handsome Islington pub built in the mid 1800's on what used to be fields back in the days when farmers paused to rest and feed their livestock before sending them on to Smithfield's meat market. Taken on by Noble Inns, the people behind The Princess of Shoreditch and nearby Smokehouse, the menu offers quality ingredients like Saltmarsh lamb hot pot and grilled hispi cabbage, Cornish hake served with violet artichokes, coco beans, pancetta and green olive tapenade, and Chart Farm venison with Jerusalem artichoke, hazelnuts and chanterelles and, reassuringly, all the meat is butchered on site. The signature bar snack is a 'beef sausage roll' with horseradish and you can eat the full menu wherever you are - either in the 'restaurant' bit or at the bar. Both food and drink are "nicely judged" is the Telegraph verdict: "traditional with a twist".
