Canadian-born, New Zealand raised chef Anna Hansen has blazed a trail with her Clerkenwell restaurant, The Modern Pantry, opened in August 2008 just down the road from her former employer, Fergus Henderson. Londoners have been so taken with her that she's even been awarded an MBE for her services to the restaurant industry. Seven years after the original, she launches a second Modern Pantry in the city, a 3,400 square feet space on the corner of Finsbury Square and City Road with a tapas bar as well as a cafe. Known for its crisp, fresh produce and zingy fusion flavours, The Modern Pantry offers mains like cavolo nero (or curly kale) served with hijiki and manouri cheese, grilled miso marinated onglet steak, baharat and lemon marinated Welsh lamb rump, and roast Cornish monkfish served with garam masala lentils and lime creme fraiche. It's also a great place to go for brunch with choices of fresh, seasonal fruit salad with plain yoghurt and a few toasted seeds on top, gluten-free pancakes, scrambled eggs with chorizo and toast, roast tomatoes and mushrooms.
