Black Rock, a Shoreditch whisky bar which sets out to demystify the spirit has, at its centre, an 18 foot, hollowed-out tree trunk. The bar, made from a 185-year-old European oak tree, (ingeniously) has in-built whisky ageing troughs - one lined with American oak, the other Limousin oak. One contains a seasonal whisky-based cocktail while the next door hollow features a bespoke house blend for £7 a dram. Designed as a modern black-and-grey space with 36 seats, Black Rock brings whisky into the 21st century with a soundtrack of hip-hop and electro funk to go with it. Black Rock has been set up by Thomas Aske and Tristan Stephenson who are also behind Whistling Shop around the corner - if space is limited you can grab a drink there while you wait. Updating the fermented grain drink from a tipple for the slightly older gentleman, Black Rock gives us over 250 whiskies to try and not a single one that's the same.
