Hackney Coffee Co. occupies a 19th Century former brewery on Hackney Road. Chesterfield sofas, quirky design features and hundreds of books provide a sophisticated backdrop to quality coffees and teas, cakes, pastries and sandwiches. Founders Jon Penn, James Penn and Kevin Mills have family backgrounds firmly rooted in London's East End. Jon and James' cockney grandparents ran butcheries, and worked hauling sugar from the Tate & Lyle refinery in the Docklands. Kevin's family have owned this Hackney Road premises for more than 60 years. Since the 1930s, the site has been variously a transport depot and mechanics garage run by the Mills family. When Kevin's father retired in 2015, the Hackney Coffee Co. was born.
