By the riverside, the Star and Garter in Putney occupies a wonderful position for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. More bar than pub these days - descirbing itself as a 'Wine Lounge' and 'Events Venue' - it even has a rather unique addition: a dedicated 'Cheese Room' where artisan cheeses from England, Spain and France are served. Instead of pints and crisps it's cheese and wine tastings at this imposing former pub (previously Bar M). Wine may be what they specialise in - and there is an extensive wine list - but ale drinkers fear not, you can still get a decent pint from one of the two hand pumps. This is a former pub with wine bar aspirations but there's no disputing the great location - a prime spot for some riverside relaxation.
