A new buzzword for 'budget boutique', the Munich-based Ruby Group has coined the term 'lean luxury' to describe its affordable accommodation for cost conscious travellers. At the Ruby Lucy Hotel London on Lower Marsh, luxury means laid-back comfort instead of formalities. They've saved on space so you save on pounds. The vibe is 'character and soul instead of polished surfaces' and while you might not get a heritage building, you do get a central location directly opposite Waterloo Station. From here it's a ten-minute stroll to the Thames, the Southbank and the London Eye, from where Big Ben and Westminster are a short walk. The decor at the 76-room hotel is paired back and minimal in the rooms, more colourful in the communal areas - the carnival theme comes from the area's bustling fairs and markets. Expect circus drums and juggling pins, rich, dark tones with bright brass fixtures. Not at home unless you're rocking out? One of the more quirky elements is a Marshall amp in each room - don't worry if you didn't bring your guitar, you can borrow one from reception where self-check-in via a tablet reduces that time to under one minute.
