Making its debut in Marylebone, Treehouse Hotels is the latest project from Barry Sternlicht, founder of Starwood Capital Group and creator of W Hotels who turned Hotel Russell into The Principal. On Portland Place, opposite the BBC Headquarters, the 95-room Treehouse Hotel is playful, rustic and nostalgic with cuckoo clocks and sloth soft toys among the design touches. L.A. hotspot Toca Madera run the high-end Mexican restaurant, Madera, and there's a "truly sensational rooftop lounge and bar" called The Nest with a tandem swing, DJs and 360-degree views of the central London skyline. Backyard, the coffee/wine bar that meets you on entry, feels like an actual treehouse with exposed wood and branches. While reclaimed wood and exposed rafters give the hotel a wild and woody looks, it also takes an eco-conscious approach to recycling and sourcing everything from the sheets to the toiletries. The Starwood Capital Group boss hopes to fill a gap in the market with this hotel which, "revels in the fun of it all and doesn't take itself too seriously". Little brother to Starwood's luxury 1 Hotel brand, Treehouse is "more torn jeans and t-shirts".
