This old fashioned fish bar has a long history of no-frills cooking, fresh catches are bought in daily from Billingsgate market and dished up with chips and lashings of tartare. Ark Fish Restaurant comes from a long line of fish-selling and can trace its roots back to 1971 when John Faulkner set up the Marylebone-based Seashell restaurant. After many additions to the business, many changes of address and a few name changes the business now sits deep in east London, in a large whitewash building that wouldn't look out of place on the south coast. Ark is named after the registration number on the van that delivered the fish from Billingsgate Market to the original Faulkner fish restaurant more than forty years ago, and it seems that is not the only characteristic that has stuck. They still get their fish fresh from Billingsgate and they haven't messed around with the cooking styles either. Ark has kept things simple for their customers. They don't take reservations so it is first come first serve. Once seated you pick your fish, decide whether you prefer it fried grilled or poached, then drown the lot in vinegar and finish with a dollop of mushy peas. Easy. Or if you prefer your sea creatures in a shell, go for the seafood platter. Winkles, whelks and a whole lot more for £25.
