Established in 1974, Meraz has been serving up authentic Indian food since the first generation of Bangladeshi, Punjabi and Indian immigrants came to London. A LondonTown reader visiting London from the US, Estee Chaikin, came across the well established Bengali restaurant after it was recommended by a friend. She wrote, "As a visitor from the US, you hear about Brick Lane and when wandering there you don't know where to start, but after going off the beaten path... I found Meraz Cafe. It would be great to tell visitors about this hidden gem." The New York Times also rates the place, describing it as, "unlike many of the tourist-trap Indian restaurants aiming for your business," noting the "designer seating areas and kitschy art". The chapatti off the grill comes highly recommended. Next time you're heading down Brick Lane make a detour to Meraz.
