The terrace at Ognisko Restaurant is "tented and lanterned" and overlooks a small park, making Guardian food critic Marina O'Loughlin feel like she's "scored London's luckiest alfresco table". But that's not the best bit about this Polish restaurant in South Kensington, a sparsely decorated dining room which was originally the Polish Hearth Club. Vodka and placki - potato pancakes, "crisp like rosti, topped with chicken livers in a plum sauce studded with dried black cherries" - come top of the list for The Guardian reviewer. Tim Hayward, writing in the Financial Times, agrees. His pancakes of grated potato topped with spiced livers "proved to be one of the better decisions I've ever made. This "standout dish" comes with "cushions of chicken liver, pink at heart, mounded on the pancake base". All credit to Jan Woroniecki, who also runs Baltic in Blackfriars, for making such a success of it.
