The dilapidated frontage of this spectacularly haunting museum conceals 300 years of immigration and thousands of precious memories. Tucked away in Spitalfields, 19 Princelet Street provides a vivid insight into the history of settlers in Britain.
French Huguenots, the Irish, Jews, Bengalis and the people of Somalia have all found refuge within the rickety shell of this building. First occupied in 1719 by the French Ogier family, by 1869 Jewish settlers had built a cavernous synagogue in the garden.
‘Suitcases and Sanctuaries’ is the site specific exhibition that has been captured through the eyes of children. Actors, poets, artists and children from local schools were asked to contribute. Its creativity is fresh and loaded with honest meaning. A collection of piled up brown suitcases is possibly one of the most moving images.
Unfortunately, the building is too fragile to currently permanently welcome the public. However there are isolated, scheduled open days in the summer when visitors can cross the museum’s dusty threshold. To avoid disappointment, we recommend you contact the museum as soon as possible to enquire.
