During the 18th century the Greenland whale-fishery vessels docked at Rotherhithe, giving the dock its current name. Constructed to resist, as far as possible, the pressure of the ice, the ships would leave London at the beginning of April for Greenland and its whaling-grounds. Whatever catch the crew - normally about fifty per boat - brought back would be boiled down for oil at the docks. In 1807, the Greenland Dock was purchased by William Richie's Surrey Commercial Dock Company which eventually owned all the docks built at Rotherhithe over the next 70 years. It established over 150 acres of docklands, primarily used for the North European trade in timber, hemp, iron, tar and corn. Many of the docks have now been filled in but Greenland Dock remains and is by far the largest body of water left in Rotherhithe. Used purely for recreational purposes, it is also one of only two working enclosed docks on the south bank of the Thames and is a stop on the Thames Clipper commuter service.
