The ornate Pagoda at Kew affords spectacular views across the botanical gardens and beyond, across the rooftops of London. If you visit the gardens it is well worth the extra cash and effort to climb its 253 steps and admire the vistas and the design of this striking structure. The Pagoda is a prime example of the Chinoiserie craze which swept into the UK during the mid-18th century. Designed by architect William Chambers - the man behind Somerset House - this was a quite different project drawing on his time spent working in the Far East with the Swedish East India Company. The 50-metre tall octagonal tower tapers in as it rises 10 storeys in the air, colourfully decorated with ostentatious dragons. From the top you can glimpse landmarks such as Battersea Power Station and the London Eye, whilst on a clear day the view extends to encompass the arch of the Wembley Stadium and Canary Wharf.
