Opened in 1993 and located in South Bermondsey, The Den is the home ground of Millwall Football Club. The 20,146-capacity stadium (less than a quarter of a mile away from the original Den) was designed with effective crown management in mind - Millwall FC being a club with a long history of crowd problems and rather fanatical supporters. The Den was also the first new all-seater stadium to be completed after the tragic Hillsborough disaster. Millwall's first season in the new stadium saw the Lions come agonisingly close to promotion to the Premier League: the side finished third in Division One but lost in the playoffs. Two years later, Millwall were relegated to Division Two, where they stayed until winning promotion five years later. 2002 again saw the club come close to the Premier League, but another defeat in the playoffs left the south-east London side thwarted. In 2004, Millwall reached their first ever FA Cup final after a superb run - and despite losing 3-0 in the final to Manchester United, the final appearance assured the club's first (albeit short-lived) taste of European football at The Den.
