Millennium Bridge

Millennium Bridge hotels title=This sleek, £18.2million 325m steel footbridge designed by Sir Norman Foster spans the River Thames between St Paul's Cathedral in the City and the Tate Modern gallery at Bankside. When the Millennium Bridge first opened on 10th June 2000 it became London's first new Thames crossing in more than 100 years. Between 80,000 and 100,000 people turned up to make the initial journey however it closed two days later. Its early years were beset by problems the most serious of which was the excessive swaying which became a characteristic feature of every crossing giving rise to the nickname: 'The Wobbly Bridge'. A more flattering alternative is the 'Blade of Light'. Having identified the source of the problem as people walking the 'wrong way' the bridge was finally re-opened to the public in February 2002. It now forms a stunning architectural feature, providing a great access route across the Thames and linking up many of London's riverside attractions.Best for:Combining architecture with access, linking the old and the new.
