The two doorways leading to this basement Indian restaurant literally straddle the entrance to Borough Market on Southwark Street. Yet despite its close proximity to the 'larder of London', Silka doesn't stand out as a top foodie destination. Blink and you'd miss it. However for very decent, very fresh Indian cuisine and all at great value prices, you'd be well advised to keep an eye out for this place. You can tell when you're onto a good thing when the poppadams are cooked in fresh, piping hot oil. Follow this with lemon sole covered in coconut and wrapped in banana leaf, then try the beautifully textured aubergine in a creamy, mildly spicy sauce. They also have a section of 'Advenurous Show Bites', described as 'where east meets west' if you prefer that kind of hybrid. The atmosphere may be lacking - they've tried to muffle the echoy, stark white space with circular discs in the ceiling - but the food more than makes up for it. If you're in the London Bridge area and you're in the mood for something hot, this is the probably your best bet.
